65,000 signatures delivered to Swedish parliament calling for ban on Frankenchickens

Today, Project 1882 delivered more than 65,000 signatures to Members of the Swedish Parliament, calling for a national ban on Frankenchickens. The handover took place together with a protest for the chickens outside the Swedish Parliament.

In Sweden, over 110 million chickens are slaughtered every year, and around 99 % are Frankenchickens. According to a recent survey commissioned by Project 1882, seven out of ten Swedish voters support a ban on the breeding of Frankenchickens.

“The strong public support for stronger rights for chickens must be translated into political action. During this election campaign, we want to see commitments to a ban on Frankenchickens”, says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.

All parliamentary parties agree that the current breeding and keeping of chickens present serious animal welfare concerns, but not all parties are prepared to support national legislation. During today’s rally, three political parties expressed clear support for a national ban, while others argued that the issue should instead be addressed at the EU level or through industry agreements, similar to those introduced in Norway.

"When the industry fails to act, politicians must step in. The animal welfare problems are widely recognised, and Sweden now needs clear political action to end the use of Frankenchickens”, says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.
